The famous (never used) cab call sign at the St. Regis Hotel at 55th and 5th. Many years ago cabs waiting at the hotel would be given numbers to indicate their order in line, like they do in bakeries. When their number appeared on the sign they could come forward to pick up the next passenger.

It's very interesting!
Is it because of no space to wait for lots of cabs?

I think it was used to keep the cab drivers from squabbling with each other as to who is next in line.
